Less of those balls being "pinged" across the box... I think the restriction of opposing shots has been the single biggest effect of AVB's tactics: the high defensive line in front of a mobile goalkeeper and the incessant closing down. However, I don't think poor finishing is entirely at fault for the low goals-to-shots ratio. I reckon a lot of that is down to the quality of the chances being created. We're taking a lot of shots through crowds of defenders or from the edge of the box. We're getting very few tap-ins. We're not often presenting the strikers with straightforward goal-scoring opportunities. Significantly, we are not winning penalties, because we rarely get an attacker through the defensive cordon and into the penalty box. This is product of the loss of advanced midfield creativity, following the departure of van der Vaart and (less importantly I think) Modric. Acquiring Holtby is plainly an attempt to replicate what VDV used to bring to the team. Once he feels at home in the squad, I would hope that we'll see more penetration, easier chances and more goals from the strikers.
